Brain Braking System
In our day to day lives, we often get into situations where we just act on an urge to react. These reactions get activated when someone is inhibiting an impulse, cognitive, or emotional phase. And such phases direct us towards an unwanted response which we mostly regret later.
The ability of handling such situations gets remarkably better with practice and time. Strong emotions reduces our capacity to think quickly and correctly, it also reduces any future thoughts making it even worse. Our emotions’ intensity reduces when our brain’s braking system is activated. Studies show that it happens more easily when we are able to label an emotion in simple words.
The problem is, we generally do not want to talk about our emotions. We like to suppress them or ignore them instead. Our intuitive strategies for regulating emotions (don’t talk about them), do exactly the opposite of what we intend, leaving us less capable of dealing with the world adaptively. Leaders, who deal with intense emotions all day, could do well to develop techniques that truly keep them cool under pressure. – Harvard Business Review
